Amalgam was banned as a dental restorative material in Norway in 2008 due to environmental considerations. An electronic questionnaire was sent to all dentists in the member register of the Norwegian Dental Association (NTF) one year later, to evaluate dentists’ satisfaction with alternative restorative materials and to explore dentists’ treatment choices of fractured amalgam restorations.

Personer i tannhelsen har blitt kvikksølveksponert og fått en påvirkning av nervesystemet under arbeid med amalgam. Dette kan ha ført til klinisk sykdom hos enkelte som har hatt høy eksponering for kvikksølv og/eller er særlig følsomme for kvikksølv, skriver artikkelforfatterne.

Bruken av amalgam er sterkt redusert. Det er flere faktorer som har gjort seg gjeldende: Stadig flere pasienter ønsker tannfargede fyllinger av kosmetiske eller andre grunner, samt helsemyndighetenes tilrådninger om valg av tannfyllingsmaterialer som kom i 2003.

This practice-based study aimed to record the use of restorative materials, the type of restoration by class, and the reason for and the age of failed restorations in primary teeth by means of a survey of placement and replacement of restorations in 1996 and 2000/2001. Written alternative criteria for placement and replacement of restorations were provided for the participating clinicians.
