Are LED Lights a Hazard to Human Health? -

There is no evidence that the general public is at risk of direct adverse health effects from Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) when the lights (lamps for lighting and displays) are in normal use, the European Commission stated in a recent published Opinion. The Scienti c Committee on Health, Environmental and Emerging Risks (SCHEER), having a NIOM scientist as expert member, authored the Opinion.

Restorative materials for severely affected primary molars -

Reduced follow-ups and increased cost effectiveness were best obtained using preformed metal crowns (PMCs) in children with severely affected primary molars at high caries risk. This is the conclusion of a collaboration study between the City of Helsinki and NIOM.

NIOM has added two new tests to their repertoire. The new test methods are the Shore hardness test for lining material, and the bond strength test for lining on denture base materials.

Be proactive: pointers for safe and effective physical protection in the clinic -

There is no doubt that the most serious health risk to dental staff is due to infection by microorganisms such as viruses and bacteria. In addition there are other hazards that pose a health risk and require physical protection.

Toxicity testing of composites -

None of the tested composite materials was deemed less safe to use than the others, a recent report from NIOM concluded. The release of monomers from the different composites was similar. Initial cytotoxicity screening of extracts of the materials indicated some differences between the products. However, further evaluations could not verify a cytotoxic potential.

CAD/CAM-produced three-unit bridges.
Gap settings matters -

In a recent investigation from University of Oslo and NIOM, none of the three-unit bridges produced with different CAD/CAM systems attained the nominal settings for the cementation gap. The measured gaps were up to twice the sizes set in the CAD-software.

A more reliable and less time-consuming test method to evaluate the micro-tensile strength of the repair bond between old and new composites has recently been published. The improved test method is based on studies carried out previously at NIOM.

NIOM scientists develop new etching technique for zirconia ceramics – improves adhesion of resin cements -

NIOM scientists have developed a surface etching technique that improves adhesion between resin cement and zirconia. This new method called Melt Etching is based on melting of fluoride compounds, and can be readily adapted by dental technicians.

Standardization and patient safety – ensuring that dental materials are safe and effective -

When considering patient safety, the quality and adequate function of a material or device is given by its mechanical strength, chemical stability and biocompatibility. Standards allow for ease of trade, since the product or service is well described, so that the manufacturer and the consumer have a common understanding of its expected performance.

Nylon dentures may be a good alternative -

Polyamide, or nylon, is an alternative material for removable dentures. They do not release allergens and have acceptable water sorption. Nylon dentures are thus promising, although they still lack clinical documentation.

Occupational hazards in dental clinics -

Dental personnel have the potential of being exposed to a variety of chemicals during the working day, many of which may cause temporary or permanent injury. A recent article co-authored by NIOM scientist Jan Tore Samuelsen in “Tandlægebladet” breaks down the risks dental personnel face during their working day in terms of exposure to a variety of chemicals.

Hardness testing of dental materials and tooth substance -

Hardness is an important mechanical property of dental materials and is defined as the resistance to permanent surface indentation. NIOM has recently acquired a new hardness tester, and the instrument is used in a range of different research projects.

Forty-five anniversary – and many more to come! -

Lisbeth Normann, Secretary to the minister of Health and Care Services, officially opened NIOM’s 45th anniversary seminar. Her speech centred on the establishment of NIOM in 1972, the changing dental health situation since then and the role of dental health in Nordic and European perspective in the time to come.

Reported data is scarce on light curing times of restorations and irradiance of the curing devices used. In this study we sought to improve the knowledge of such parameters as total light dose applied to a restoration layer and the total potential exposure to reflected light to the dentist’s eyes during a workday.

Are antibacterials necessary in caries prophylaxis? -

Antibacterials should not be administered routinely for caries prophylaxis, but rather only when conventional plaque control is likely to be ineffective. There are many different antibacterial agents on the market, but there are few agents with an evidence-based long-term anticaries effect.
