Adhesion of Escherichia Coli to Nanostructured Surfaces and the Role of Type 1 Fimbriae -

In this study a method of producing a large number of identical nanostructured surfaces is presented. E. coli wild type and deletion mutants of the type 1 fimbriae monomers FimA or FimH were tested for their ability to adhere to such surfaces with different interpillar distance of 100, 250, and 500 nm, respectively. An increase in interpillar distance (reduced surface coverage) was associated with reduced adhesion of E. coli wild type and the deletion mutants. In addition, the presence of a functional type 1 fimbria decreased adhesion to the nanopatterned surfaces in comparison to deletion mutants, leading us to the conclusion that there is a relationship between presence of a functional fimbriae and adhesion towards tested surfaces. The hypothesis that the presence of fimbriae had an effect on bacterial attachment to nanostructured surfaces was verified. These current results could provide insight into development of new nano-patterned structures with anti-adhesion bacterial properties.

Dentin to dentin adhesion using combinations of resin cements and adhesives from different manufacturers – a novel approach -

The aims of this study were to present a novel method to analyse dentin bond strength and to evaluate the bond strength of combining adhesive systems and resin cement from different manufacturers. Based on the results and within the limitations of this laboratory study, it can be concluded that using alternating combinations of resin cement
and adhesives seem possible and that the resin cement were the weakest components in the bonded dentin-adhesive-cement-complex.

Protein Profiles of Individuals with Erosive Tooth Wear -

The present work suggests that protein profiling in saliva may provide a tool for determining differences in risk for erosive tooth wear. This may be of value when determining lifetime risks of loss of dental structure. To identify the risk at an early stage of the disease gives us the opportunity to implement proper individualized prevention

Minimally Invasive Dentistry -

“Minimally Invasive Dentistry” has over the years been well presented in the Nordic countries as well as in all Europe. Nevertheless, it does no harm to remind ourselves about the principles behind this concept. Based on updated knowledge on caries and tooth wear, in combination with new and improved adhesive restoration techniques, there are good […]

In Vitro Effects of Dental Monomer Exposure – Dependence on the Cell Culture Model -

Methacrylate monomers are major components of resin-based biomaterials. The polymerization of these materials is never complete, and methacrylates leaking from cured materials cause exposure of patients. Only some selected methacrylates have thoroughly been tested for possible interaction with living cells. In the current study, we compared the effects of 2-hydroxyethyl-methacrylate (HEMA; a carefully studied methacrylate) […]

Er helserisikoen ved snus undervurdert? -

Obesity and oral health -

Obesity of different degree comprises individuals with a body mass index BMI) of 30 or more and is often combined with cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, whereas overweight below 30 is not. Obesity has a hereditary component combined with environmental factors such as unhealthy food and lack of exercise. In addition, fatty tissue contains inflammatory mediators […]

Ion release from three different dental alloys – effect of dynamic loading and toxicity of released elements -

The frequency of enamel and dentin caries lesions among elderly in Tromsø, Norway -

Data on oral health among the elderly in Norway is sparse. The aim of the present study was to describe the distribution of enamel-, dentin-, root- and secondary caries within an elderly population in Northern-Norway. A study population (n=1 173) was divided into four age groups: 65–69, 70–74, 75–79 and 80–94. Seven calibrated examiners registered […]

Estimating molar-incisor-hypomineralization among 8-year-olds based on 15-year public oral health practice-based data -

The study showed that the average prevalence of MIH among children of 8 years in Helsinki was comparable to that reported elsewhere. The number of MIH-affected teeth at early mixed dentition predicts the affection of other permanent teeth over time, mainly that of permanent canines. An irrelevant number of children had MIH-affected second primary molars. Further screening of children with MIH-affected teeth is recommended to improve individually tailored early preventive and restorative dental care. In this way, an early intervention will facilitate management of further clinical dental problems of MIH-affected teeth and improve oral health-related quality of life of children with this condition.

Dental erosion in mice with impaired salivary gland function -

Salivary flow rate exerts an essential impact on the development and progression of dental erosion. In this work, the experimental dental erosion in non-obese diabetic (NOD) mice with reduced salivary flow rate was induced, and the erosive effect of acidic drinks on their dentition was studied.

Restorative material choices for extensive carious lesions and hypomineralisation defects in children: a questionnaire survey among Finnish dentists -

This survey shows that Finnish dentists are rather homogeneous in their treatment decisions when managing primary tooth caries or a severely affected MIH tooth, although some practices vary between general and specialised dentists. Moreover, the disparity in treatment practices between different areas of Finland is evident. The proportion of SSC as a material choice was low. Patient co-operation plays a big role in treatment decisions and may explain why GICs were the most popular choice for restoring extensive primary tooth caries. The emphasis should be on behavioural management as well as on the evidence-based treatment recommendations.

Effect of thermal cycling on temperature changes and bond strength in different test specimens -

There is no generally accepted protocol for resin composites that simulates and accelerates ageing of the materials under oral conditions. Even though thermal cycling is one of the procedures used to seriously try to simulate physiological aging of restorative materials, review of the literature on thermal cycling procedures shows that there is little or no consistency in protocols and variables. This makes it difficult to compare results from the various investigations. Selection of variables like size of specimens, storage time, and dwell times in water baths, transfer time and number of cycles, appear to be selected by investigators mostly based on convenience rather than referenced observations or scientifically founded facts

Aquaporins’ Influence on Different Dental Erosive Wear Phenotypes in Humans. -

Dental erosive wear is a multifactorial condition of high prevalence. Nowadays, there is an emphasis on discovering individual genetic predisposition for the development of this condition. Aquaporins (AQPs) are water channel proteins expressed in salivary glands, as well as during tooth development. They are involved in salivary secretion and composition and linked to physiological protection of the oral cavity.
The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between different dental erosive wear phenotypes, AQP genes, and selected environmental factors.
