Sammendrag av doktorgradsavhandling: «Toxicity of resin based dental restorative materials in vitro» -

Artikkelens hensikt er å belyse toksisiteten av utvalgte metakrylatmonomerer i modeller som kan relateres til cellulære mål in vivo. En cellelinje med opphav fra spyttkjertel-epitel og primære epiltelceller fra rottelunge ble valgt som relevante modellsystemer. Monomerene 2- hydroxyetylmetakrylat (HEMA) og trietylenglykoldimetakrylat (TEGDMA) er to metakrylater som er mye brukt i resinbaserte tannbehandlingsmaterialer, og cellekulturene ble eksponert for disse i varierende konsentrasjon og varighet.

Acidity and titrable acidity of different soft drinks and beverages in Norway -

The potential erosive effect on teeth from different drinks is sometimes presented by the simple initial pH. Such measurements do not however, reveal the buffer capacity of the soft drinks and beverages, i.e their capacity to maintain a low pH in presence of neutralizing factors. The goals of this experiment were to measure initial pH and calculate the titrable acidity (TA) of 21 different drinks.

Biotransformation enzymes and lung cell response to 2-hydroxyethyl-methacrylate. -

The aim of this in vitro study was to investigate possible involvement of cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes in modifying the toxic potential of 2-hydroxyethyl-methacrylate (HEMA). Primary cultures of CYP expressing rat alveolar type 2 cells were exposed to varying concentrations of HEMA. Nuclear translocation of aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) after HEMA exposure (100 μM) was demonstrated by immunocytochemical staining.

Dual-cured luting materials tested -

Dual-cured luting materials tested according to some of the requirements in “Dentistry – Polymer-based restorative materials”.
Measurements were performed at NIOM according to ISO 4049:2009. Twelve materials were tested with two shades (if available). The data were collected from 2009 to 2010.

Blant de tannrestaureringsmaterialer som brukes i dag er en stor andel basert på metakrylater som herdes i pasientens munn. Herdingen av slike materialer er aldri fullstendig, og komponenter som ikke har reagert, kan lekke ut. Hensikten med avhandlingen var å belyse toksisiteten av noen metakrylatmonomerer som finnes i plastmaterialer for tannrestaureringer.

Optical characterization of biomaterial/radiation-exposed oral mucosa by reflection spectroscopy -

Previously, we have reported data obtained from near-infrared reflection spectroscopy (NIRS) used to non-invasively monitor tissue changes after optical exposure. The results indicated that oral mucosa may be more sensitive than skin to blue light. In this pilot study, visible data from NIRS (VNIRS) was used to observe differences between exposure groups with respect to the following parameters: pigmentation (melanin index; MI), blood oxygenation (OX) and erythema (erythema index; EI).

Role of bonding agents in the repair of composite resin restorations -

Six commonly used composite resin materials and recommended bonding systems were tested to assess shear bond strength at the interface between aged and new composites with and without bonding. Test specimens were aged in water for 60 d before new composite was placed.

Biological and physicochemical properties of carbon-graphite fibre-reinforced polymers intended for implant suprastructures -

The aim of this study was to determine water sorption, water solubility, dimensional change caused by water storage, residual monomers, and possible cytotoxic effects of heat-polymerized carbon-graphite fibre-reinforced composites with different fibre loadings based on methyl methacrylate/poly(methyl methacrylate) (MMA/PMMA) and the copolymer poly (vinyl chloride-co-vinyl acetate).

Health hazard from resin-modified glass ionomer materials in pediatric dentistry. -

Resin-modified glass ionomer fillings are commonly used in pediatric dentistry. We have investigated possible exposure of monomers from such materials in vivo. Saliva was collected at three time points, pre-treatment, immediately after placement, and one week post-placement, from 20 patients aged seven to ten that had their first resin-based glass ionomer filling placed.

The methacrylate monomer 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) is commonly used in resin-based dental restorative materials. These materials are cured in situ and HEMA and other monomers have been identified in ambient air during dental surgery. In vitro studies have demonstrated a toxic potential of methacrylates, and concerns have been raised regarding possible health effects due to inhalation. In this study we have investigated the mechanisms of HEMA-induced toxicity in the human lung epithelial cell line BEAS-2B..

Contemporary tooth-coloured filling materials -

Tooth-coloured materials dominate restorative treatments in the Nordic countries today. The most recent developments have concentrated on monomers and filler particles. The present article discusses the composition of and results from laboratory studies on contemporary materials with specific focus on nanocomposites and the clinical relevance of laboratory studies. Furthermore polymerization by LED light curing units and the risk of release of hormone-like chemicals from composites are briefly discussed.
