Factors associated with initiation and use of snus among adolescents -

This study investigate factors associated with the initiation and continuation of snus use in adolescents in Norway. The associations with adolescents’ own educational plans, the parents’ educational level(s) and tobacco habits were estimated.
These findings may aid in developing and targeting tobacco prevention strategies aimed at young people. Tobacco prevention measures should start at the elementary school level. The strong association with parental tobacco habits underlines the importance of parents’ influence on their children’s tobacco use.

The present review aims to give an overview of the literature focusing on novel genetic aspects of dental erosion and dental caries. Once the tooth erupts into the oral cavity, the regenerative capability of enamel is fundamentally limited due to the loss of dental epithelium during eruption. The susceptibility or resistance to dental erosion and caries is presumably a result of environmental, phenotypic, and/or genetic influence. Stainless-steel crowns in children: Norwegian and Finnish dentists’ knowledge, practice and challenges -

Stainless-steel crowns (SSCs) are recommended for restorative treatment of young teeth severely affected by caries, fractures or dental developmental disorders (DDDs). However, despite recommendations and clinical evidence, SSCs are not widely used by general dentists, who favour extraction and more conventional restorations. The present study aimed to investigate the views of and use of SSCs among Norwegian and Finnish dentists.

Allergic reaction after treatment with a mandibular advancement device -

Mandibular advancement devices (MADs) are used in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea. A patient (woman in the 60-ies) was treated with a MAD (SomnoDent Fusion Flex; SomnoMed AG). She experienced reactions in form a burning sensation in the mouth, ulcers on the tongue and gingiva, and swelling of the tongue. Allergy test (patch test) with Dental Screening Series showed a strong positive reaction to methyl methacrylate, and clear reactions to ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA).

Antimicrobial and physicochemical characterization of endodontic sealers after exposure to chlorhexidine digluconate -

The primary aim of root canal treatment of teeth with apical periodontitis is to eliminate the microbial load from the root canal system and promote periapical healing. Meticulous mechanical debridement of the root canal system significantly reduces the bacterial load and is considered important in canal disinfection. However, complete elimination of all microorganisms is challenging, as viable bacteria potentially remain on the dentin walls and inside dentinal tubules, both in planktonic forms and biofilms. About 35% of the root canal area is left untouched when conventional rotary and hand instruments are used. Therefore, disinfection with irrigation solutions during root-canal treatment and thereafter obturation of the root canal are important factors to reduce the amount and growth of residual bacteria.
